Who We Are

GEM-GHANA is a local community-driven organisation dedicated to advancing dignity, opportunity, and inclusion for marginalised populations across Ghana. We focus on communities where inequality is most visible, supporting women, girls, and vulnerable groups to overcome social and economic barriers through practical, evidence-based interventions that create lasting impact.

Working alongside local leaders, institutions, and development partners, we transform lived experiences into informed action. Our approach prioritises listening first, ensuring that programmes are shaped by community realities rather than imposed solutions. Through research and collaboration, we promote responsive initiatives that address unique local needs.

We believe true empowerment means equal participation, access to opportunity, and shared prosperity. Through education, advocacy, and strong partnerships, GEM-GHANA strengthens community voices and expands opportunities, ensuring that every individual can actively contribute to and benefit from Ghana’s development journey.

Our Mission

Promote the socio-economic empowerment of marginalised communities through research, policy advocacy and collaboration that responds to their unique needs.

Conduct community-based research and needs assessments to generate credible data that informs inclusive programmes, strengthens decision-making, and highlights the lived realities of marginalised populations.
Engage government institutions, civil society, and stakeholders to influence policies and resource allocation that protect rights, expand opportunities, and address systemic barriers affecting vulnerable communities.
Build strong collaborations with local leaders, development partners, and grassroots organisations to design and implement sustainable solutions that respond directly to community priorities and promote shared socio-economic progress.

Our Vision

Transform marginalised communities in Ghana into socio-economically empowered groups that actively engage in and benefit equally from national development.

Design and implement livelihood, skills development, and entrepreneurship programmes that increase income opportunities and reduce dependency among marginalised groups, particularly women and youth.
Conduct research and policy engagement that amplifies community voices, influences inclusive public policies, and promotes equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic resources.
Foster strategic partnerships with government institutions, civil society, private sector actors, and local leaders to create sustainable interventions that enable marginalised communities to actively participate in and benefit from national development.

Our Strategic Objectives

Clear, measurable goals driving our mission to empower marginalised communities by 2030

5

Strengthen Institutional Capacity and Strategic Partnerships

Our Journey

From a small grassroots initiative to a national movement empowering thousands of women and girls

How We Started

GEM-GHANA was established in 2005 by a passionate social advocate who witnessed firsthand the challenges facing women and girls in rural Tolon in the Tolon District of Ghana. What began as a small personal project in Tolon in the Northern Region has grown into a nationwide movement reaching all 16 regions.

Our founder recognised that sustainable development could only be achieved through the empowerment of women and girls. This vision drove him to formally register Girls Empowerment Mission (GEM-GHANA), through the support of three (3) youth activists, Mrs. Mary Maaka Ali, Alex Atua and Yussif Zakaria as a local national organisation focused on holistic empowerment. Addressing not just economic needs, but also building capacity, advocating for rights, and creating systemic change.

2005

Established Year

The idea to establish the organisation was conceived in Tolon while the Founder was serving as an English Teacher with the Ghana Education Service. During this period, he began supporting brilliant but vulnerable girls by providing disposable sanitary pads to encourage regular school attendance. He also extended small financial support to senior high school graduate young women to help them start small businesses and build independent livelihoods.

2008 – 2019

Strategic Growth Pause

The Founder temporarily paused operations due to rising demand against limited organisational resources. During this period, he intentionally focused on personal and professional development to strengthen capacity, refine strategy, and reposition himself to execute the organisation's long-term vision more effectively and sustainably.

2020

Official Registration

GEM-GHANA was officially registered as a National Non-Profit Organisation with the invaluable support of Mrs. Mary Maaka Ali, Alex Atua, and Yussif Zakaria, establishing a strong foundation for holistic empowerment and community development.

The organisation successfully launched its maiden outreach activity at the Tamale Children's Home, where the team donated food items, clothing, and detergents to support sixty (60) children, demonstrating its commitment to compassion, care, and meaningful social impact.

2023

Growth. Innovation. Impact.

The organisation appointed its first Executive Director and officially launched the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills Training (YEST) programme, equipping young people with practical skills in leather sandal production and professional makeup artistry. During the same period, the organisation secured its first institutional funding support from the West African Civil Society Institute (WACSI) to implement the “Digital Security and Resilience Training Outreach” in Tamale. The project was successfully carried out between June and September 2024, strengthening digital safety awareness and resilience among Civil Society Organisations, selected State Security agencies, and Educational Institutions.

2025

Milestone Achievements (2005–2025)

Directly empowered over 10,000 women and girls through targeted empowerment and capacity-building initiatives. Expanded organisational presence with the appointment of an Upper West Regional Representative to strengthen programme delivery and outreach within the region.

Successfully launched nationwide virtual programmes via Zoom on domestic violence prevention, health, and wellness, reaching participants across all sixteen regions of Ghana and beyond. Impacted more than 8,000 individuals through structured educational engagements while actively engaging over 100 volunteers through our WhatsApp coordination platform.

Currently operating across all sixteen regions of Ghana in collaboration with more than ten partner organisations. GEM-GHANA continues to scale its impact through innovative programming, strategic advocacy, and sustainable economic empowerment initiatives designed to strengthen communities and promote long-term social change.
