Progress & Outcome Report: Empowering Women Through Leather Sandals Making

We are proud to share the inspiring journey of Rashida Zakaria, a beneficiary of GEM-GHANA’s 3-Month Leather Sandals Making Training Cohort-1. Rashida received hands-on training at Gbanzab Paga Leather Works in Bilipela, Tamale-Ghana, where she gained valuable skills in leather craftsmanship.

Following her successful completion of the training, and with a modest startup support from GEM-GHANA, Rashida launched her own business, Masha Allah Leather Works. Her shop now serves as a source of livelihood and empowerment, enabling her to sustain herself while creating opportunities for others.

Committed to paying it forward, Rashida has actively trained 10 young women through GEM-GHANA’s One-Month Leather Sandals Making Training Cohort-2. These women are now equipped with practical skills to pursue their own economic independence. Plans are well underway for Rashida to lead Cohort-3, expanding this empowering initiative further.

Key Achievements:

  • Skills Development: Rashida mastered leather sandals making, transitioning from trainee to skilled artisan and entrepreneur.
  • Business Establishment: Masha’Allah Leather Works is now a functioning enterprise contributing to local economic growth.
  • Community Impact: By training 10 additional young women, Rashida is fostering a culture of skill-sharing and empowerment among women in her community.
  • Future Growth: Preparations for the upcoming training cohort ensure the continued expansion of opportunities for women interested in leatherwork.

Impact and Community Changes:

  • Rashida’s success challenges traditional gender roles, demonstrating women’s capacity to thrive in skilled trades.
  • Her mentorship helps build confidence and economic resilience among young women.
  • The initiative promotes sustainable livelihoods and inspires other women to explore entrepreneurship.

Rashida’s story exemplifies how targeted training, support, and mentorship from GEM-GHANA can transform lives and communities—one sandal at a time.
