On 19th March, 2022, GEM-Ghana in collaboration with SEDARVP-Ghana, embarked on a day’s Skills Development training for forty (40) final girls in of Tolon Senior High School in basic liquid soap making techniques. The purpose of the training is to empower the girls economically to depend on themselves for their basic needs and to enable them to be productive to themselves after completing their SHS programs and awaiting their results.
The colourful event, which was marked by glee from students, promises long lasting benefits in the lives of the participants. In the Northern parts of the Ghana, studies have shown that majority of girls from the rural community migrate to the Southern part of the country to seek jobs after their BECE and WASSCE examinations. This and other reasons informed GEM-GHANA and SEDARVP-GHANA’s decision to empower the final year girls with the soap making skills, which will help them remain in their communities and initiate their own self surviving business.
The participants were trained on how to arrange and mix chemicals in their right qualities, the use of protective clothing in the production process as well as packaging of the product for the market. This Skills Development event, has a goal to serve as a source of livelihood (job) for the final year girls after their final exams. The participants were allowed to take turns in the production process so to give them first-hand knowledge of the production process. In all 100 bottles of liquid soap were produced after the training, which were then distributed amongst the students who participated in the exercise.
The school management on behalf of the girls expressed its gratitude and thanked GEM-GHANA and SEDARVP-GHANA for empowering the girls on this lifelong Skills Development.
